I know it is frustrating when any BOINC project goes down. I am glad, however, that when I have hardware failure, which is inevitable when you run it wide open 24/7, that I don't get a lot of angry messages from the project teams deriding me for not doing a better job. I do the best I can. I just think that if the project is important to me, then it is probably that much more important to those who want to see it succeed. Let's cut them some slack, OK? Dear C@Homers, Professor Wandelt is currently working on a hardware upgrade and on a quick fix idea that he is trying to implement by tomorrow. We will let you know as soon as we find out how things will turn out. We thank you for your patience and support, and we understand the frustration that the recent problems have caused some of you. I also would like to report that we are currently interviewing for the system administrator position. We will keep the process going until we ensure that a competent and dedicated person is appointed. Best wishes, Faik --- Member of the C@H Team! |

I was a system support and admin at UNCG for 7.5 years. I live is North Carolina, but would like to be considered if there is still room to throw my hat in the ring. Regards, Mark W. Patton |

Mark, I don't know if there is. But if there is, I've already found that sending Faik or Professor Wandelt a copy of your resume or CV is likely to help. They've already said that I don't have the right kind of system administrator experience they are looking for, so you may have a better chance than I did. You might want to mention your experiences with what operating systems, and what computer languages, when you contact them. |

Dear Mark, Originally, we were trying to fill this position by finding an undergraduate student at UIUC. However, recently we have opened it to other categories of people affiliated with the university (graduate students, for example), hoping that this will help us find a qualified individual quicker. I am not sure whether individuals from outside the university community are eligible for it. However, I will bring your interest to Professor Wandelt's attention, and I will let you know if he thinks you are eligible. As Robert has mentioned, he had talked to him in the past, so I am not sure what he has in mind. I will let you know! Best regards, Faik --- Member of the C@H Team! Hi everyone - Just a quick update as I am working on this. First of all, yes, this is frustrating, and not just for you. Now for some good news: 1) I managed to get help by a very competent system administrator at Illinois. 2) In the short term the disk space problem has been resolved through a house-cleaning and purging old files. (That was the quick fix idea that I mentioned). 3) I am ordering 4 TB of additional disk space and will have that installed asap. Now some bad news: The system administrator has discovered that the team data base needs to be repaired. There is an access problem that we have to solve for him (since the old system administrator set a mysql root password and we are trying to get in touch with him). Back to the good news: Once that is done we will be able to resume operations. Then in the near future there will be a planned downtime for an operating system upgrade and an installation of the new disks. Again, thank you for your patience and continued support. All the best, Ben Creator of Cosmology@Home |

HI again - Another update. 1) As some of you have noticed, in addition to the file system problem, the team database was temporarily corrupted. It is possible that those two events were linked. 2) Thanks to the intervention of the Astronomy system administrator this problem was resolved and the database was repaired. 3) I just ordered 4 TB of new disk space to give us some breathing room in the file system. 4) We will take the disk upgrade as an opportunity to a more substantial upgrade of the BOINC software, which may fix one or two other annoying bugs that people here have had to put up with (that did not affect scientific functioning of the project, but were annoying nevertheless). 5) I will keep you updated and make a news item when the system goes down for the upgrade. Thanks for all your patience and continuing support. All the best, and happy crunching! Ben Creator of Cosmology@Home |
