Dear C@H Community Members,

I have been recently recruited by Professor Benjamin Wandelt in order to contribute to creating a tighter connection between the " the citizen scientists and the scientist citizens of Cosmology@Home" . I have created this thread so that our valued community members could let us know of any concerns, suggestion or requests they might have. I have been reading different threads on the forum, and I thought that by creating a thread dedicated entirely to this, members of the community could find a visible place on the C@H website to give us their feedback. Like Professor Wandelt has explained on many occasions, the participation of members of the community on this project is fundamental to its success and is an indication of their serious interest in cosmology. We are very grateful for that!

I will be checking this thread, as well as other threads, frequently, and either I or Professor Wandelt will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hello Robert,

Thank you for bringing this problem to our attention. I will refer it to the member of our team who deals with the technical aspects of the website. Please let us know if you encounter any other problems in the future.

When I go to Profiles, then Names begging with R, there appears to be space at the top of the page reserved for a picture that didn't download properly.

I searched the list for my own profile and didn't find it. Could this mean that you have adopted the same spam-restricting method as some other BOINC projects - don't allow the profiles to display for users who don't have a certain number of credits yet?

I now have enough credit for my profile to display, if that was the problem..

Two things:

1) Someone needs to review the credits system. For a 127 hour long WU, I got a measly 420 credits. Unacceptable. Give credit according to work done, don't make it a fixed credit system which sucks

2) Please either increase the reporting deadline or send out smaller WUs. As I mentioned above, I just finished a 127 hours WU (on a modern CPU) and I barely made it. As I crunch for other projects too, the high-priority problem becomes a concern in BOINC, which will lock the long WU in that mode for days thus locking one of the cores to that WU only.

I am an older individual. Would like to see some form of certificate such as seti@home etc so I can put it on my wall to impress my grandkids and greatgrandkids ;).
also can you develop solme form of scrensaver, once again such as seti@home, this would make it more interesting whereby we cold see what our computer is doing. Both of these wojuld be good for positive reinforcement.

Hi Faik,

Concerning the Home Page: http://www.cosmologyathome.org/ ;
the link given at the end of the Featured Concept: Type 1a Supernovae, labelled "2011 Physics Nobel Prize" connects to a 'page not found'.

The web page intended is probably:

http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/2011/press.html

Regards, Andrew

Hello Timmydog,

I completely agree with you that is a great idea :) I have also thought about that, and now that you bring it up, I feel that I am not alone in thinking that. At the moment, we are working on the concerns of our valued members bit by bit, but I did want to write to let you that we hear you and that we will get back to you on this as soon as possible.

Dear Faik,
C@H was suspected to be an abandoned project not long ago, and so I stopped crunching for it.
I would really like to rejoin a C@H which is part of an useful scientific workflow.

Would you be so kind to explain:
Is C@H actually part of a useful scientific workflow (again)?
Does somebody work with the Data which we produce?

Best regards

Dennis

P.S.: I do not care about credits. I am just interested in the project itself.

Dear Dennis -

Let me take this one. C@H is fully alive. Yes, we went through a period of constrained funding and human resource bottlenecks and we are now coming out of it stronger than before.

After starting the project on a 3-year project funded by the NSF funding ran out and the project essentially sustained itself on no external funding for a while. The main developer (Scott Kruger), who had done the technical work to set up the project as an undergraduate and joined my research group as a graduate student, received an offer that was too good to refuse and left the graduate program (that's an unfortunate side effect of attracting great people and teaching them cool and useful things, like high performance computing, GPU acceleration and Bayesian statistics...).

Chad Fendt, the graduate student with whom I developed Pico (the back-end that uses the results from our work packages to analyze cosmological data sets), graduated and took a great job that unfortunately does not involve cosmology (again, apparently my grad students become too useful to people with lots of money to stay in cosmology...)

Last year C@H became an important part of the Planck project and is now funded by NASA. The results will be used for the analysis of the Planck data (check the C@H wikipedia page for an explanation). So the project is fully alive, we are getting ready for the analysis of the Planck data and we are currently updating the C@H application to be able to further increase its accuracy and to be able to use it for an even wider set of cosmological models.

If you look on the message boards you will see posts by the Planck outreach coordinator and you will have noticed Faiks many responses to user questions and concerns, as well as new content for cosmology enthusiasts.

So, I hope we will be able to welcome you and many others like you back to C@H!

All the best,
Ben

Best,

Ben

Dear Dennis,

Thank you very much for your inquiry. I was away for Thanksgiving break, otherwise I would have responded to your request earlier. As Professor Wandelt has explained, the project is still well and alive. In fact, we are currently thinking of ways to make this webpage more entertaining and engaging for our valued members.

If you have any other concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will do our best to address your concerns as soon as possible.
