Dear C@H valued members, Speaking of 'matter' the Server status page are reporting "camb_assimilator darkmatter Not Running". I wonder how long BOINC will try to upload the result files before it will be aborted \ deleted? |

They are two men, one helpless, the other guy travelling. Shit happens. Project still has got my *** solidarity. But Prof should really check his scripts or harddisks next time, before travel to somewhere. |

Hello "Ray_GTI-R", Communication with our community members is a priority at C@H. It is one of the primary tasks that Professor Wandelt has assigned to me. usually, I check the discussion boards at least twice a day to make sure things are running smoothly. I am very glad that we could work together to improve the performance of this project. Thank you very much for keeping us informed about your concerns and for informing us of problems when they occur. Best wishes, Faik --- Member of the C@H Team! |

When my computer attempts to download 2/7/2012 5:48:51 PM Cosmology@Home Started download of params_012312_091752_2.ini this crashes the BOINC manager and all processing for all projects stops. |

Faik, kind words, thanks. :-) No progress. :-(( Reading your other replies to this issue the BOINC credit that I should have earned may be completely lost i.e., no return for my time, capital investment, human & electrical energy for 36 hours solid processing to complete just 2 tasks then automatically & manually checking, re-submitting results. OK, it's a shot in the dark but hope that you "get it"*. I have opted out of this project once before for a different reason but tried again recently just for fun. These (mis)adventures are becoming a broken record. * "maybe" is a cop-out IMHO. |

I guess, you will lose credit when Ben fixes the issue after the deadline of your finished WUs. There is a chance that the credit granting acts totally normal, when Ben fixes the issue before the deadline of your finished WUs. What you seem to want is something like free credit for your lost work. Well, i will lose ca. 40000 credits because of this issue. I fully understand that it "hurts" in some way. But let me bring up this: Last time C@H granted free credits because of an issue (5000 credits for every user) it caused new trouble to the project. I do not know the exact number, but several thousand crunchers attached in this days just to get the credits. Imagine for a moment, what new problems could arise for us. Imagine for a moment 3000-5000 users attaching to cosmo, do not getting credits and detaching (perhaps unclean) at once after some days, maybe without finishing even one WU. In the end, they have produced ca. 20000-80000 Ghostunits, causing download errors for everyone of us. I do not want to talk against the "free credit" thing. I just want to remember that this could cause new problems for the project and its users, including you Ray. |

I guess, you will lose credit when Ben fixes the issue after the deadline of your finished WUs. i totally agree. if everyone loses their work for the last several days, why is that so terrible. all distributed projects suffer from these types of issues from time to time and those that participate in them should accept those issues. is it optimum to lose work? of course not. but if it happens every once in a while, why do people feel compelled to quit? cause you lost credits and feel your contribution of computing power was wasted? yes, it was wasted but, as mentioned previously, that will sometimes happen and its sorta a hassle. as for c@h, ive been running the project on and off for a while and think that the project is wortwhile; else i wouldnt dedicate my machines to it. i believe once this issue is resolved and everything is back on track the project will continue to be useful. hiccups occur from time to time. in my experience, this current issue does not make c@h any less interesting as a project. and im sure if the wus i have pending for upload are lost and i lose the credit, they will be sent out again and recrunched and the project will be just fine. all i know is that c@h has been one of the more stable projects over the years and i appreciate the good work the team does there to keep the project running well. hopefully noone will take my opinion the wrong way and i hope you all continue to contribute to this and all the other interesting projects boinc has to offer. thanks. |

Ben should schedule his trips more carefully to coincide with periods when the server is functioning normally. --Bill ![]() |

It's a little disconcerting that a project of this magnitude has only one person who can "kick" the hardware when something goes wrong. No underpaid grad student(s) to help? Hmmmm.... oh well. |

Indeed! That is definetly the point which should have priority before all other things (besides the actual situation of course). I`ve written something about this in the "suggestions..." thread, maybe one of you has some ideas as well? |

I wish I had noticed this problem earlier. That's a whole lot of work completely wasted. |

Actually we guess that "just" the work is wasted, which will have reached the deadline before Ben has fixed the server. Referring to my computers, he has still a little time (although, time is running of course). |

My wu's will be deleted next week. Does anybody know when Professor Wandelt is supposed to be back? In one week, one month? |

We do not know, of course that is a matter of privacy. Maybe some days, maybe a week. He seems to be away since last week, i do not think that he travels 3+ weeks. But, i would not recommend to delete the WUs. I do not want to trigger false hopes, but it is technical possible to extend the deadline. I have still 15 WUs with deadline 09.02.2012. They are not automatically deleted by the boinc client. I hold them and look what happens and if you allow me to give you an advise, you should do this way too. You neither waste bandwith nor memory with that. |

I think that if the wu's are not reported back before deadline they will marked as 'unvalid' and sent out again and there is nothing I can do to prevent that. |

There were similar cases in other projects (Aqua f.e.)... |

Dear Mr. Faik/Falk, In message #10041 you said: ...My task here at C@H is to communicate with our community members ... We, your community members, have been asking again and again when Ben will appear to work on this problem. You have not answered; you have failed in your "task ... to communicate with our community members". Please do your task, as you have described to us. Please communicate. Please provide the oft-requested information! Thank you. --Bill ![]() |
