My two machines have not picked up any new tasks in nearly two hours. According to the server status page there is one task they could have but it just won't play ball! All the programs are reported as running so maybe more data is needed??

Thanks.
2) Forums : Technical Support : One boinc2docker v2.00 job stuck on 0.1% for 10 minutes (Message 21091)

Post:
Marius asked for some feeback on the v2.00 jobs first issued last week. They seem to be very stable and consistent and my machines have processed over two hundred of these boinc2docker jobs without any noticeable drama. I was therefore surpised to see one task stuck at 0.1% progress for over ten minutes this morning. I suspect it would have hit the 100 minute job limit if I had not intervened. I just suspended the input queue and waited for the short running GPU job from another project to finish before suspending this task, quitting boinc and rebooting. As I half expected it then went on to proecess normally.

I've isolated two bits of the job log which I think are quite telling; from the first attempt (note the time of the D-Bus message and the next):

2016-06-06 10:04:34 (4508): Guest Log: Running boinc_app...
2016-06-06 10:04:34 (4508): Guest Log: Importing Docker image from BOINC...

2016-06-06 10:15:15 (4508): Powering off VM.
2016-06-06 10:15:16 (4508): Successfully stopped VM.

And at the same point in the re-started part of the log (again note the time of the D-Bus message and the next):

2016-06-06 10:18:34 (84): Guest Log: Running boinc_app...
2016-06-06 10:18:34 (84): Guest Log: Importing Docker image from BOINC...

So whatever was meant to happen in the 10 seconds after the D-bus message didn't happen on time in the first run.

All this caused me to check the error jobs again and I've two more instances of jobs timing out but the problem seems to be in different places in the run. The tasks are 40881287 and 40839379. This last one was suspended at checkpoint and resumed the next day, my normal routine.

I've also one example of the finish file present too long (known problem) task 40881241.

I think it could be the version of the VB you are using.

The default BOINC download page for Windows x64 says BOINC 7.6.22 and VB 5.0.10 but since at least March 14th, when I rebuilt my BOINC installation, it actually downloads 5.0.12. - I've just checked today and it is still doing it. I'm not sure how you have 5.0.14 though, did you mean 5.0.12??

Back in January when I resumed doing BOINC after some years away, the same default download page offered 7.6.22 and Vb 5.0.10 (As stated). It looks like something changed when a new beta test version of Boinc was offered with VB 5.0.12.

In my case VB 5.0.12 seems to be the cause of an intermittent error I reported here the weekend before last. Going to Oracle's VB pages and getting VB 5.0.10 seems to have sorted that problem. I just stopped BOINC as usual and installed over the top and re-booted.

As I understand things (could be wrong here) VB 5.0.10 is the latest version signed off for general use on BOINC unless you are beta testing a development copy of BOINC.

Hi, Marius - thanks for checking this out.

I thought I had better re-install Boinc just in case something had got corrupted, so I did that earlier today. It was after that I noticed the version numbers for the Virtual box I downloaded today didn't match the stated version on the download page. I had once again downloaded 5.0.12 like I did some weeks ago when the web page says 5.0.10. Looking at the all version page it shows 5.10.12 only for the development version of Boinc not the approved version.

I was just pondering how to get back to 5.0.10 when I looked at the running tasks and caught another one running in H.P mode with time to end increasing rapidly. It had only done 26 minutes or so processing for 0.1% progress. I suspended it (my Boinc system is set to suspend in memory). Another task took its place and after about half a minute I resumed the problem task and suspended the running task. The problem task continued to increase its time to finish but progress was stuck at 0.1%.

I then suspended everything and shut down Boinc and re-booted. Once everything came back up I resumed the problem task and just like on Thursday it started progressing normally and every 15 seconds or so the time to finish dropped significantly. The task 39000292 ended normally and I even got credit for it!

I've now downloaded version 5.0.10 of Virtual box from the Oracle pages and with Boinc shut down installed it and re-booted. Hopefully it might just fix it but I will report any future instance I see.

After the problem with this task on Wednesday I resumed the task yesterday. It started making progress - % complete increased and the expected run time came down from 58 days to 5 hours very quickly and kept reducing. I had to go out and so I left it to run. Unfortunately, it hit the 100 minute total time limit having wasted 85 minutes getting nowhere on Wednesday!

Looking at the log today shows it was working as intended i.e the log contains several repeated sets of variables with different values in each set.

I've also compared this log to a log of a job that completed successfully this morning. This extract in yellow is from the successful job.

You will find lines like those in yellow above in the log of the problem job but they are from the Thursday re-start. Just why there was no mention of Loopback or Broadcast (twice) on Wednesday is a complete mystery at the moment but clearly it had a big impact.

If I should catch another job in high priority state and it has used less than 75 minutes, I'll suspend it and resume it without re-starting Boinc to see if that works.

I've suspended this 25288527 workunit as it looked all wrong. Boinc Tasks showed it was 0.1% through its run after 1hour 25 minutes and that it needed 58 days 23 hours 25 minutes 28 seconds to finish. Shame the deadline was just 6 days and 8 hours ahead. In these circumstances Boinc switches to High Priority mode meaning it won't time share this job if other CPU based projects are running.

This is the third such instance I've caught, the previous two I just cancelled out but I thought I'd try and investigate this one a bit more. In the D:\ProgramData\BOINC\slots\1\boinc_32fca6ed73bcac70\Logs I found the Vbox.log file. It's 64kb of goggledy-gook but the end bit looks interesting...

In the first instance it never recovered from not finding the D-bus in the second it did (the second instance continues on much further). Hopefully, this will help somone who understands this stuff to narrow down the problem.

Setup is Win10 Pro x64, Boinc 7.6.22, VM 5.0.12: memory available to Boinc 7781Mb, Disc avail 221Gb (SSD). Also running are (in slot 0) Milky Way (GPU/ATI), Boinc Tasks, TThrotle and the usual malware stuff. At the time of the problem nothing else was running. Much earlier today I had added a file to limit the cpus used to 3 to save keep suspending the project when I want to use the machine meyself but given this is the third instance to this happening in 6 weeks I don't think that is the cause.

Similar problem here looks as if it might be a problem batch. I noted the out of memory message about 20 lines up from the end of the error text and re-configured to use 95% of 8GB instead of 50% and re-booted. Still got the 137 error regardless; some of mine don't show the out of memory message although I can't be sure which were processed after I re-configured.

One example with the out of memory message: 24844307

and one without: 24892892

For the moment I've changed my Cosmology@Home prefences to take only the Planck app.

There was an error in the database and the host table was corrupted. I have repaired the database so we\'ll see if that fixed the problem.

One happy customer here! - Thank you.

You were getting a http error, I\'m getting file not found

No I was getting file not found when I wrote that in January 2009. Before sometime in November it was the HTTP error that required the aborting of the transfers.

Looks like nothing has changed since I posted this.

At least we don\'t have to abort the downloads and it is only a tiny bit of bandwith that is wasted. I don\'t know if the units are re-sent under a different ids later, if they aren\'t then the science will suffer.

Whilst it doesn\'t seem to be causing a problem at the moment the count of work units and results awaiting deletion has been rising over the last day or two. It might be an idea if the admins can investigate before the database reaches its tipping point.

Nothing changed... no cosmology... :(

If I go into my account on Cosmology and follow the link to \"computers on this account\" I can see that the total credit for my two machines is a little more than that currently showing on Boinc Stats for the Cosmology project. That is probably correct due to time between the stats export from here and when I checked. However, my hosts total on Boinc Stats is still well adrift from the total for the project or the overall total. The reason may have something to do with this!

I did find a nice graphical representation of the original Cosmology problem from Boinc Combined stats.

Once again, if anyone has any suggestions to help expedite this process they would be most welcome.

Anshul,

Please see my earlier post in this thread. I don\'t don\'t know if it came about as a code change, if it did it would have been on November 28th, 29th or 30th, so there should be few changes to check. It may be an enviromental problem of course; database / file /volume is full or faulty etc. If you still have any job logs from November 30th that would be a good place to start.

I used to use Speedfan but had to remove it due to conflicts with other Asus software which caused the other Asus software to trigger both high and low voltage alarms as well as random temperature alarms - all false!

The Ai Suite, which I now use, is currently indicating a CPU voltage of between 1.1680 and 1.1760 volts regardless of whether it is in o/clocked mode or not. I am a bit puzzled by that so I am not sure how much reliance I\'d put on that reading to be honest.

The Asus instructions for the motherboard stress the system won\'t even boot unless both the 24 pin EATXPWR and the 4 pin ATX12V connections are made. This is one area where manufacturers are liable to be very different but it is probably worth re-reading your manual just to be sure.

Incidentally, my power supply is rated at 550w and it is also running a GTX260 graphics card.

About 18 months ago I ran some tests on my old Pentium 4 1.9 Mhz machine. I noticed a drop in performance when I added a PCI card with additional 4 USB ports and again with a network card (RJ45 connnector). I suspect it was acombination of reduced current available and also bus contention on the motherboard. So if you have added any non-essential hardware best remove it if you can, less is definitely more in this game!

When I run BM\'s CPU benchmarks, I consistently get about 5600 to 5800 Dhrystones on this system now. When the system was just built (quite bare) and didn\'t have ANYTHING additional running (like AV), I was only getting around 6000 Dhrystones.

Sounds about right. I normally overclock slightly but without overclocking runing Vista HP 32 bit and Boinc 6.5.0 (with free AVG and free Zone Alarm running) I get:

2617 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
5733 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU.

Using Ai Suite (An Asus download - only for their brand motherboards) at the default \"auto\" performance setting of 2.8 Mhz I get:

2717 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
6122 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

However even small programs can have an impact on performance; in overclocked mode with Win Mail and Win Media sharing processes running I got:

2718 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
6083 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU

So be sure to turn off anything you don\'t need. I\'ve just turned those two extra Win processes off! - Thanks Bill...

I use Win Patrol (free edition) on all my machines as I could not be bothered to fight Vista\'s Window\'s Defender everytime I wanted to run a program!

The motherboard I ran the above tests on is an Asus P5K-V with a an Intel Q6700 (Retail boxed set still with its standard Intel cooler). Memory is a single 2Gb module of Kingston\'s 667MHZ DDR2 ECC.

Hope that helps..

Same procedure as last year...

Yes, but at least no intervention is necessary now unless you have an ancient version of Boinc!

Yesterday I checked all the download failures in my task list. All were re-sends after a unit was cancelled / project detached /etc after 12 hours or more or the task was time expired (no reply). I did find some successfully downloaded re-sends but these were send to me no more than five minutes after the first attempt to download.

Without any knowledge of the code on the server side it is difficult to be sure what is happening but it looks as if either:

a) files on the server are being deleted somewhere between 5 minutes and 12 hours after the first download attempt and before successful completion is reported back

or

b) file permissions are being changed in a similar timeframe.

I think we can rule out file permissions not being set for all users originally as re-sends within five minutes of the first attempt at downloading seem to work OK.

It is possible that these Wu\'s are being caught by a follow on process and are being resent as original units (with different ids). That way they wouldn\'t impact the overall result, but I have no evidence one way or the other what ultimately happens to these units with too many errors.

I doubt we\'ll hear much from the project team about this (or indeed the other big issue hanging over from last year - what happened to the host stats) until the new term starts around Jan 20.

Same here.

At first I thought it was just Willy\'s Boinc stats which I normally use but the origin seems to be the project\'s export of host data. See this link to another stats page and scroll down half way. Note the change on November 30th (the day the system came back from the outage). Both my current machines have lost their credit but not the machine that I retired in the summer. Again my personal total is unaffected. It just doesn\'t add up!

FYI, did a boinc service restart and a project reset, problem solved, this time.

I must admit it has been puzzling me why it was not possible to down load much immediately after the system came back from the outage. It was so bad I even posted in the Urgent thread thinking something must be very wrong again.

However, I think it must have been to do with the original problem. Prior to around November 15th/ 16th the bad wu\'s had to be aborted by hand. If they weren\'t they sat trying to download until their 10 day deadline was up. So on the 30th we had all those wu that were sitting on people\'s computers until their deadline was up during the outage become available. This time they didn\'t have to be aborted but the numbers coming through were such some people couldn\'t get any work for a few hours. After mid-day on the 30th the error rate was very variable but it seems to have settle down now. It all seems to fit with the 10 day deadline.

Incidentally, the problem is still occurring - I\'ve just had a 120208 wu fail to download but a replacement arrived a few seconds later.

In the hope that this thread is still being monitored...

Please see the Leftover errors thread.

Rate of errors is currently much higher than before the outage. One of my machines did manage to get 10 wu\'s earlier but both have now reached their daily download limits of 164 and 180 respectively. Both need 25 or 26 good work units per day and this won\'t be possible to get today. I am running with a small reserve of wu\'s but I suspect many won\'t be able to make any progress until this is fixed.
