Most projects that have mt or vbox apps do not even have an example app_config in a FAQ. I have come here in the past just to copy the app_config setup for other projects. I have linked to it on other project forums as well. It's no hack. Paste it in a text file and rename to app_config.xml. The event log will mention the correct app name/plan class to enter in the file.

I think I saw on LHC forums that 5.2 does not work for all of their apps. Work blocks their forum so I can't check. Maybe it was the CMS app.

Yes it takes time for the BM to adjust the estimates. It's working ok for me.

Will the docker app be resumed now that the pentathlon is over?

Yes, I'll add more jobs soon as we finish the batch of Planck jobs sitting in the queue.

It's getting close, 4300 tasks left.

I was wondering it the ETA was just way off (short) to start and at the completed checkpoints it was adjusting to a longer ETA. That doesn't seem the case if it's going back to the same checkpoint.
8) Message boards : Technical Support : Camb_Legacy 2.17 jobs restarting (Message 21447)
Posted 23 May 2017 by mmonnin
I am seeing the camb_legacy jobs restart constantly. Some get to about 15 minutes then go back to 13 minutes, over and over and over again. It would crash and reload from a checkpoint forever if I let it. This is with VB 5.1.22

For reference, the legacy tasks to not use VB. Just planck and docker.

Is the % actually going up and down or just the time estimate?

10) Message boards : Technical Support : Planck tasks - how to change the memory size for VM (Message 21435)
Posted 14 May 2017 by mmonnin
For Planck task, currently the default VM memory is 2048MB. How can I change this?

For e.g. task http://www.cosmologyathome.org/result.php?resultid=53181589 which was just completed, show a 2GB of VM memory set aside. I would like to lower this so that I can run more tasks.

Below is the partial output of the task log file:
Stderr output

I'm not sure if its actually needed tho.

None of my other tasks have aborted since after releasing the work done so far.

Thanks for that update. If you read the thread I linked, I think almost definitely the problem had been caused by running multiple clients on one machine. Good to hear that it seems to be fine now.

As for your the other problem with tasks being completed by other users, I though we had fixed that, let me look into it...

The email distribution link? I signed up and got the last two replies a few days ago. Those same clients returned successful work later w/o any changes. The same ones that later had aborted tasks cause they were sent to someone else. It wasn't purely caused by setting up multiple clients. Luigi's explanation fits better but these clients have returned work for this and other projects.

What is the deadline for these tasks? It says over 2 weeks but I just had over 30 tasks canceled after a week.

I just lost a ton of work as the sever sent out my WUs again to someone else and canceled mine. I've got another set of units like this.

mmonnin, are you disabling your network adapter or are you disabling network transfer from within the clients themselves?

And these were Linux boxes right?

Disabled network transfer for BOINC in the client.

Yes, Linux Mint.

That command will limit 1 task so I don't see how you can be running one from each app.

You can limit which app is sent to you by adjusting the project preferences.

Put this in your app_config.xml to run a single task. Adjust the number as needed.

Can you tell me in more detail how exactly you're bunkering? Did you just turn off network access for the machine in question? Or are you doing anything else like running multiple clients on it, etc...?

(Fyi there's some discussion of this problem on the BOINC mailing list here too)

I am running multiple clients. I find it easier to control the uploads and still be able to get more work and visit the website.

I grabbed some work on several clients and shut of networking. They were crunching fine. Several hours later I turned networking on to upload the WUProp task and all the tasks suddenly aborted. vbox and legacy. That includes the ones that were crunching OK prior to allowing network access and ones that hadn't started yet. Happened to at least two clients. I have done the same thing twice since then to see if my work has been wasted but they did not abort.

Block access via the hosts file if you want to stop uploads for the pentathlon. Only the vbox apps require networking to be on to compute.
