The error is most likely not on your side. It seams that a lot of work units that was maked as Status = 'Timed out - no response' has been sent out again and if they already have been marked as 'Valid' you workunit will be maked as 'Invalid' even if your result is correct. Take a look here http://www.cosmologyathome.org/forum_thread.php?id=667&nowrap=true#10188

It seams that a lot of work is just wasted.

Maybe the main reason to use voluntary free computing was just to get funding? I know for sure that one of the main reason other project have got their funding is that they was using voluntary free computers. Sometimes I suspect that there is little scientific relevance at all, the man reason is just to get money that are used on other things.

Well, providing computer 131173 in the example S@NL - Mellowman posted before is on line which is usually the case

it should not be a download error on his copy of Workunit 10948256. If it shows up later as "Completed and validated" we will know for sure.

"in progress" means, that the client has not reported anything yet. The next contact of that host will show what's going on :-)

p.s.: This is what it usually looks like. One timeout (or crashed or aborted), then a few download failures.

p.p.s.: Hmmm, I checked a few more, it seems that both situations can occur now, I have downloaded one re-delivered result successfully. A bit surprising for me :-/

What are you saying? Can a download error show upp both as Status = "In progress" and Status "Error while downloading"?????

There seems to be no "over and over again" in this project. No workunit will be processed twice as the workunit source file seems to be removed after the first delivery (that's where all those download errors on replacement deliveries come from).

"No response" results (timeout) might fail with "too many total/error results" though, caused by the results with 404 error.

Is that so? If you look at this workunit as S@NL - Mellowman posted before it looks as it is processed a second time, the status says "In progress" and not "Error while downloading"

To Tomas,

I have been recieving 'out of work' messages from the server since day two of the upload issue so to me, this suggests Cosmo have stopped sending out WUs. I dont see why you would get any different.

Because the message on the server page on 18 February was 'Results ready to send 22'. The server seams to have some wu's for downloading from time to time but according to Ananas it is not wu's that has ben timed out.

I can tell you that workunits that miss their deadline are send out again to other clients.

So the best thing to do would be to not accept work until this get fixed.

Anthony.

As I suspected. I have set Cosmo on "Won't get new tasks" in the Boinc manager on my computers so it doesn't matter for me but others that have not done likewise and are still running the project will cause the workunits to be sent out and processed again and again as long the server are unable to receive files but are able to send out workunits. This is a complete waste of voluntary recourses and is to be careless with your voluntary participants. Faik! Way haven't you stop the server from sending out workunits while you are waiting for the current problem to be fixed?

When I look at the 'Server status page' it says 'Results ready to send 22'.
I take that as the server are still sending out workunits and among them
workunits that already are done but cant be reported back because of the current problems with the file system.

If that is the case a lot of volunteers work is wasted. Why do you not stop the server from sending out workunits as long as you can't receive the finished files?

Does the server still sending out wu's?

If it does would not that mean that all wu's that are not reported back before deadline will be sent out again?

Hello C@Homers,

The Cosmology@Home team is currently upgrading the filesystem for C@H. Hopefully this will help us overcome the problems we have been encountering. We will keep you updated about our progress (I am not personally participating in this technical process, but it is being done by qualified individuals)

I got the impression from your previous post here that Ben Wandelt was the only
person working with this project. Now you say there is a "Cosmology @Home team" upgrading the filesystem?

I think that if the wu's are not reported back before deadline they will marked as 'unvalid' and sent out again and there is nothing I can do to prevent that.

I recall that other projects (SETI and Milkyway, in particular) have been able to give credit to WUs that went past their deadlines when the projects were having server problems...

The credit is not that important, wasted work done is. Will wu's that is not reported back before the deadline trigger the server to send them out again as long that part of the server is running?

We do not know, of course that is a matter of privacy. Maybe some days, maybe a week. He seems to be away since last week, i do not think that he travels 3+ weeks.
But, i would not recommend to delete the WUs. I do not want to trigger false hopes, but it is technical possible to extend the deadline.
I have still 15 WUs with deadline 09.02.2012. They are not automatically deleted by the boinc client. I hold them and look what happens and if you allow me to give you an advise, you should do this way too.
You neither waste bandwith nor memory with that.

Dear C@H valued members,

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Professor Wandelt is currently traveling, but he will look into this as soon as he is back. Dealing with this problem will be treated as a priority. Thank you very much for your patience and understanding.

Please do not hesitate to give us your feedback either on this issue and on any other matter

Speaking of 'matter' the Server status page are reporting "camb_assimilator darkmatter Not Running". I wonder how long BOINC will try to upload the result files before it will be aborted \ deleted?

Hi Ryan!
IMO Cosmology@home is to be gregarde as an beta app, at best.
If you chose to run it you have to manage it manualy and just
download and run a maximum of 2 wu's at the same time on a single computer.
At the moment I run 1 wu and that singel wu use 794MB RAM.

I have a wu that got sort of get stuck at 60%.
The wu stated, jumped back to 59% and when it reached 60%
got stuck again. I manually halted the rest of the wu's I had
running but it seam at first that it would stay on 60% forever
until it suddenly jumped to 90%. The wu's are still using a lot
of memory, 666.476 MB,and 75460 I/O readings. I will try to
finish this wu and then I will stop running Cosmos. IMO. Cosmos
is currently, at best, only an @ application.

This is the messages displayed during the repeated start and stop.
