One would presume that this is supposed to be serious research, However given at a worst case scenerio they need a new HD.. it takes about 20 min to install and prep a hot swapable one.. what gives people ?

It is serious with one, temporary unavaiable, technical staff member.
If it would be serious research with everything, full budget and hordes of employees, it wouldn`t need to be a distributed computing project.
However, i am upset too, of course.

I hope that this case will lead to serious improvements of projects structure. Then, it would be the lost work worth.

Please ...

"he will deal with these server problems as an urgent matter as soon as he is back"

What exactly does "as soon as he is back" mean:- later today, March, 2014?

HELP!

Dear "Ray_GTI-R",

I have notified Professor Wandelt of these problems, and I do not know personally when he is back. However, I promise you that will happen well before March 2014. I understand your frustration, and I very appreciate your patience very much. Your desire to communicate is a real indication of your desire to see this project work.

Please, somebody send Prof. BW a round, not a square nor an oblong, but a round tuit. I believe this problem won't get fixed until he gets a round tuit !

Check Server Status. Upload/download server is running. The problem is the Assimilator. I continue to get workunits and process them. They are building up on my machine as none are being uploaded. I gave BOINC 100 Gigs of space, so this should not be a problem until the assimilator can be restored.

I finally got all the input files required for two workunits, and have finished one. But I get these error messages when I try to load two of the output files:

2/17/2012 11:19:57 AM | Cosmology@Home | Started upload of wu_013112_223141_0_0_1_2

At least those output files are rather small - there's probably disk space on my computer for the output files of at least a thousand more workunits.

Any ETA on the fix?
It's been down nearly 2 weeks now. We're getting to the point where maybe it's time to abort all those units waiting to upload and disconnect from the project.

There has been no recent communication from the U of I people of any nature that I'm aware.

I can tell you that workunits that miss their deadline are send out again to other clients.

So the best thing to do would be to not accept work until this get fixed.

Anthony.

I'm always amazed when something goes wrong on one of these distributed computing projects and some participants go absolutely ballistic! Some act - and talk - like running these projects is all the life they have! KD8AMP further down this thread is a perfect example. Geez, come on, folks! Get a grip. The world isn't gonna end if a few of these work units die of old age. I mean, it isn't like you had to do the calculations by hand, now is it? And if you miss out on a few credits, what on earth is the big deal!?

The project crew will get things fixed when they get them fixed. If your personal existance is somehow connected to that happening, you need to find another hobby, Dude.

All uploads done. About the timed-out ones :

I still could report them without problems but found that some of them already triggered a second delivery.

Imo. that doesn't matter too much, no CPU time wasted as a second delivery always results in a "file not found" error on downloading the .ini file.

edit : There is one risk though ... if you're not fast enough with the reporting, the result might get invalidated having "Too many error results" and/or "Too many total results". Afaik. a result that is in this state does not accept any successful report anymore.

The assimilator isn't running, no idea where that disk space came from. It must just have been enough for very few results, my new results refuse to upload too, just the expired and nearly expired ones went through.

Btw., I was wrong with my assumption about this "file not found" thing, it affects a lot of workunits but for others the second download does work.

I think Thund3rb1rd entirely misses the point.
Problems happen, no big deal.

However, a little common courtesy is in order. I, and it looks tome like most people running BOINC, run multiple projects. If this project is down indefinitely, we should have been informed and recommended that we TEMPORARILY shut this down where upon we could allocate our processing resources to the other projects we run. We could then come back when the issue is resolved.

Someone, earlier, asked when the Prof would be back (to fix the problem) and got some smart-ass reply, "well before March 2014." Not at all helpful or informative.

Is a small amount of courtesy really too much to ask?

I am pleased to say that all my work units have now uploaded,
though i am unable to report them,
update button abuse has no affect.
It is a move in the right direction,
Thank you whoever you are and did whatever.

Thank you very much for letting us know, "Clive"!

I mentioned last night that Professor Wandelt was working on the problem. I am glad things are already improving!

Best wishes,

Faik
