Hello C@Homers:

In this thread, I will give updates on the most recent discoveries that are taking place in cosmology. Summaries of some of the articles in this thread will be also presented in the form of featured concepts on the main page. Because the featured concept page is relatively short, I thought to put links to the full articles here for people who would like more information. Needless to us, other community members are very welcome to contribute to this page, either by discussing the findings presnted here or by putting information about other discoveries.

The first two discoveries I will start with here have been kindly brought to my attention by Dr. Jatila van der Veen, the Education and Public Outreach Coordinator for the Planck Mission.

The first is a recently observed Type Ia supernova explosion, which sheds much light on the dynamics of the expansion of the universe and the nature of the universe itself. You could find information on this remarkable discovery here and here.

The second is a discovery of the fastest rotating star on record to date (it spins around around its axis at a speed of about 6,000 km per second). "Cantiello", the leading scientist, "and collaborators explained that stars could reach such rapid rotation via a "cosmic dance" with another star so close that gravity strips gas from its surface". You could find more information on this fascinating discovery here

Hubble Discovers the Farthest Protocluster of Galaxies Ever Found:

In a random sky survey made in the near-infrared light, the Hubble Space Telescope (built by NASA, with ESA as a contributor, and operated by The Space Telescope Science Institute) has uncovered a cluster of galaxies (five tiny galaxies bound together) in its early stages of formation, at a distance of about 13.1 billion light years from Earth, putting its age at about 600 million years after the Big Bang. Galaxy clusters are the largest building blocks of the universe. They are usually comprised of hundreds to thousands of galaxies bound together by the force of gravity.

This discovery confirms theoretical predictions about the formation of galaxy clusters and sheds light into an important chapter in the formation and evolution of the universe. You could find more information on this finding here, here, and here.

Galaxy Clusters Collision And Dark Matter

In a new study conducted by a team of astronomers led by UC David graduate student William Dawson, the researchers used the merging of two galaxy clusters (called formally DLSCL J0916.2+2951 and consists of two clusters of hundreds of galaxies each, and is nicknamed Perry's Cluster after its discoverer) to gain insight into the properties of the elusive dark matter.

Perry's cluster is composed of dark matter (86 percent), superheated gas (12 percent), and stars (2 percent). Because it has a similar composition to that of the universe as a whole, it could be treated as a miniature universe. "By comparing and contrasting the behavior of the dark matter to that of the galaxies and gas in the merging cluster, physicists can rule out some theories about dark matter's properties".

You could also find more information on this finding here and here.

The Detection of the Furthest Dwarf Galaxy

In the Jan. 18 online edition of the journal Nature, a team scientists lead by MIT's Dr. Simona Vegetti has announced the discovery of the a dwarf galaxy at a distance of 10 billion light years from Earth---the furthest on record. Information about this finding could be found here, here, and here.
