Good evenning.

I want to ask, if there are any graphics are planned for the camb application. I know, they would need a lot of ressources, but they could be interesting and make people more curious for the project.

Definitely, but that will have to wait until the basic framework of the project is rock-solid.

If you would care to speculate, would you try to do the graphic in the beta stage or wait until the final stage? I think a graphic would be great. It would not have to be fancy or data intensive, just colorful and able to give some information.

Graphics are definitely planned for the future. In the short term, we'll probably use a basic static image, but we'll also work on doing something a little fancier.

Isn't it better for a new project as this to wait for BOINC 6.0, which separates the graphics from the application? Before you have to build a working application with the graphics module built in, and then later make it two separate modules again.

Would the graphics then be passed to the videocard leaving the CPU untouched?

What about those that would use the pre 6.0 client? They would get no graphics?
I am thinking along the lines of other projects with graphics...how does that work then...do they have 2 seperate apps 1 with graphics built in and 1 not?

Eventually, with server updates, the old clients will no longer work anyway.

Yes, during the transition time projects may have 2 applications, or 3, s how you look at it.
1 with the screen saver/graphics module built in.
1 (2) separate modules, one being the science application and one being the graphics application. This is done so if something happens to the screen saver/graphics, it doesn't kill the science application as it does now.

You can read about the plans on BOINC Roadmap to 6.0.

Thanks for the link and reply Ageless ....however I think the 4.45 client still works on many a project and is being used by more than a few out there....seems it might take years to weed out pre 6.0.

Not if those projects update their server code. Then the older clients just don't get any work anymore. Not unless people upgrade their client.

Of course, if a project doesn't update their server code, then that's a whole different kettle of fish. But the main projects update regularly. Even this one. (Is this a main project now? ;-))

I can't wait. The 4.x clients are making a mess of things over on SETI.

Yeah, needs a screensaver so you can see what it's doing, or at least how it's doing, note popularity seti and einstein.

Another reason to eventually work on graphics is we do not know how long BOINC 6.0 will take or if it will be able to have graphics as planned when it finally does arrive.

That's disconcerting. Graphics aren't the biggest priority at this point anyway (although they are a priority).
