I was having trouble getting my old Linux machines to access Cosmology@Home when I realized that I was trying to attach them incorrectly. From the command line, I was typing:

boinc_cmd --project_attach http://cosmos.astro.uiuc.edu/cosmohome/ address@my.domain mypasswd

However, I now realize that I need to actually put in my account key, which was emailed to me when I signed up. This means that the correct command is:

boinc_cmd --project_attach http://cosmos.astro.uiuc.edu/cosmohome/ 8718778verylongnumber89798798

After I typed that in, everything went swimmingly and my 400MHz little guy is happily crunching through a wu.

Actually, I entertained the idea that the account key was necessary, but Cosmos@Home does not require it for the GUI login, Rosetta@home allowed CLI attachment with email...and I couldn't find it on my "Your account" page. Could we have the account key added to the "Your Account" page sometime? I doubt it is very important, but more of a minor suggestion.

Scott might be able to hack the server to do this, but it would be better to submit this to Trac (link in my sig) as an enhancement and see what the developers think about it.

Better would be to use the email and password in the attach command.

You can either open the account_www.cosmologyathome.org.xml file on one of your Windows computers and copy out the key from between the authenticator tags, or you can use http://www.cosmologyathome.org/get_passwd.php to get the authenticator key sent to you in the new form (clickable link).

And else use the --lookup_account option from the command line.
See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/BoincCmd for more on that.
