Message 21217 - Posted: 5 Dec 2016, 4:35:50 UTC

I have recently updated my Oracle VM to 5.1.10 & since then 2 things have started happening..

1. All VM jobs report "Postponed - VM Hypervisor failed to enter an online state in a timely manner
2. All Cosmology 6 CPU jobs are now trying to go to VM & failing with same error..

Checking VM all jobs have been aborted (heaps)

Any suggestions thanks?

Hi Dean, I'm seeing successful jobs on your account since after you posted this message, does that mean everything is resolved? (and if so I'm curious if you know what did it, in case others are seeing the same problem)

Hi, I too am getting the "Postponed - VM Hypervisor failed to enter an online state in a timely manner" error. I am running the Oracle VirtualBox 5.0.12 (aka VB)and have been doing so for about 6 months. When I upgraded to this I was getting the same error and could find no info about what was causing it or how to correct it. Previous to this it seemed to be working correctly and I could fire up VB to see it working. After I upgraded to 5.1.12 it again seem to be working and I could fire it up from my Windows 10 desktop to watch it work. A few days ago I again noticed the "postponed..." messages.

Since this appears to be an ongoing problem and BOINC seems to be incompatible with the latest version of VB available on the Oracle web site, and rather than waste my processing time on this project, today I aborted all tasks and told BOINC not to accept new tasks. Let me know when this issue has been resolved and I will reenabled tasks.

I found a solution at VirtualBox (but can't find the link again)
it looks like there is sometimes an issue while installing/updating the VBoxDrv over an existing Installation

Stop Boinc and VirtualBox
from C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\drivers\vboxdrv
you should install "VBoxDrv.inf"
Restart the computer

After this Cosmolagy VM tasks run again on my machines.

Yea, I think this could well be related to VBox not upgrading properly sometimes, leaving some older COM libraries around. A number of people in this thread I think were having a related problem.

For example, HPETITE, your logs show you have VBox 5.0.12 installed, despite you saying you're on 5.1.X. This could be an indication of the VBox upgrade not having worked properly.

The solution that I think worked for others was,

* Fully uninstall VBox (this is the crucial step)
* Reboot
* Reinstall VBox

I'll be very curious to hear back if this solves things.

Hi. I did as suggested using the BOINC web site as provided by the Help tab in BOINC manager to install the latest software after removing VB and rebooting. VB does not start. I currently have "VirtualBox COM Server 5.0.18 r106667 win.amd64 (Apr 18 2016 14:31:52)" installed. The top of the log file has:

followed by a bunch of error messages for "path not found" for slots 0 thru 14 and then a final WATCHER error with code aRC=E_ACCESSDENIED (0x80070005) and the text "The object is not ready". Previous logs, before this reinstall/upgrade of the VB software, showed similar if not the same path not found error messages followed by error code I had previously reported. None of my current logs contain that original error message, sorry.

Like I said previously, I used to be able to click the Oracle VM VirtualBox icon on my desktop but now when I do that nothing happens. I should also state that I have two different userids on this WIN10 system, one for admin work and one "end user" ID that I use for day to day activities. Both userids have BOINC running with the same set of projects and as screen saver.

BTW, I apologize for adding to the original post with my issue. After I had done this I realized that I was running a different level of VB, not the 5.1.10 that the original post was referring to.

Message 21261 - Posted: 22 Dec 2016, 6:21:03 UTC - in response to Message 21239.

Hi, I think I was able to get my cosmology tasks to work. I followed https://www.cosmologyathome.org/forum_thread.php?id=7444 which has a link to the VirtualBox wiki downloads page. I installed the latest Windows version of Virtual box (5.1.12 r112440) from there and restarted my system. Once I was back up I shut BOINC manager down and clicked on the Oracle VM Virtualbox icon on my desktop and this time it came up with no problem. There was a list of machines with the "access denied" error for "path not found" so I highlighted them and right clicked to remove them so I was starting fresh. Then I went into BOINC manager and selected the cosmology project and allowed it to accept new tasks. Since then things have been working, crossed fingers.

BTW, the install that I just did used a different interface than the one you get when you select VB from the BOINC home page. The former shows a list of the VB component and allows you to choose which drive to install them on while the latter does not. Perhaps the BOINC VB installer is broken?

Well, I spoke too soon. I did wait more than 5 minutes before posting my previous info but I just checked VB and although I can get it to start up from the desktop, the cosmology tasks were aborted and BOINC manager is reporting the "postponed" error message for each aborted task.

The BOINC log shows:
2016-12-22 01:14:40 | Cosmology@Home | task postponed 86400.000000 sec: VM Hypervisor failed to enter an online state in a timely fashion.

At the bottom of the log for the first virtual machine in VB itself I have this:
2358.154c: supR3HardenedVmProcessInit: Opening vboxdrv stub...

I am moving my issue to the https://www.cosmologyathome.org/forum_thread.php?id=7443&postid=21263#21263 thread since it seems more appropriate..
