I saw the \"desktops\", how about a screen saver. They are great calling cards when we try to get our co-workers to become crunchers.

Its funny you should mention it now. I am actually just learning about how to create BOINC screen savers and I was going to speak to Ben and Scott about this as the next step to improving our project. We should have more news on this topic soon!

I also would very much like to have a screen-saver to graphically indicate progress (and maybe even a little derived data!) while a C@H work unit is running.

Mitrichr makes a great point about them being valuable tools to recruit new crunchers. They can also interest people in--however little, however peripherally--getting involved in science. This can only be progress.

On a vastly more selfish note... I give more computing share to projects I like to look at. As truly cool as this science is, if I can't see any activity beyond a generic progress bar then I don't really feel involved. Maybe just an approximation of what a section of the calculated universe might look like; or assign the variables you are using in the simulation to the vertices of a polygon (Lie group E8 would be nice) and change the colors based on how the math turns out.... Whatever you folks choose, I can guarantee that it will be appreciated.

+1 more

In fact, I originally joined SETI@Home mainly because of the graphics... If this project would have even cooler graphics, I could maybe even convince my gf to run it :P

Graphics would be a definite plus, even if it's a silly bouncing window with arbitrary information (a la yoyo or Genetic Life). Of course, something a bit more than this would be appreciated, but anything is better than nothing.

I also don't like when BOINC projects have no screensaver. for me personally it is a reminder of the work I'm doing as opposed to some phantom program running in the background. not to mention how much I enjoy watching it run laying in bed at night falling asleep LOL.

Pls get one up & running ASAP.

Thank you. RMc-Canada.

As a new member wanting to make a contribution I would like to see a screen saver. I note this thread was started in 2009 has there been any action on the front yet?

I am an archaeologist and teacher but have a deep interest in things universe. It would help people who are not professionals in t his field to maintain and spread interest.

and have an ujncomplicated day.

Please give us a screensaver. It would dramatically increase the popularity of this excellent project as well as making it easier to recruit laypeople.

Another vote for the screen saver, and the desktop backgrounds.
