Downloading errors again:

Cosmology@Home	30.11.2008 12:14:29	[file_xfer] Temporarily failed download of params_111908_050808_0.ini: file not found

Permission problems again?

BTW, why ist this website so f...in slow? Everytime I open a long thread I have to wait nearly a minute for those little icons (heads) to complete. Sometimes my IE is crashing, even if I open the start page of cosmology. Works as designed? OK, change your design then!

I\'ve never had any issues with this website being slow (when the server hasn\'t crashed, that is). The trick is to use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer (IE). When there are a lot of posts IE can get locked up while trying to load the images which slows down the whole page, but Firefox doesn\'t have this problem. That\'s why I switched over.

Yes, I know that it\'s faster in firefox. But this is no solution, only a workaround! It is not acceptable for users to need three different browsers for three different web sites.

The locking of IE waiting for the icons to load is what I ment when I called it slow.

In my office, it is not that slow in IE because the icons are simply not displayed. Maybe because of the security settings of the company.

What about the download problem? Any ideas somebody?

I must admit it has been puzzling me why it was not possible to down load much immediately after the system came back from the outage. It was so bad I even posted in the Urgent thread thinking something must be very wrong again.

However, I think it must have been to do with the original problem. Prior to around November 15th/ 16th the bad wu\'s had to be aborted by hand. If they weren\'t they sat trying to download until their 10 day deadline was up. So on the 30th we had all those wu that were sitting on people\'s computers until their deadline was up during the outage become available. This time they didn\'t have to be aborted but the numbers coming through were such some people couldn\'t get any work for a few hours. After mid-day on the 30th the error rate was very variable but it seems to have settle down now. It all seems to fit with the 10 day deadline.

Incidentally, the problem is still occurring - I\'ve just had a 120208 wu fail to download but a replacement arrived a few seconds later.

Seems to be a random problem downloading WU\'s from cosmos. I am getting 0 length parameter files occassionally and just posted about the problem here
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3444

I was not aware of this thead before I posted on bionc.

Yes, but at least no intervention is necessary now unless you have an ancient version of Boinc!

Yesterday I checked all the download failures in my task list. All were re-sends after a unit was cancelled / project detached /etc after 12 hours or more or the task was time expired (no reply). I did find some successfully downloaded re-sends but these were send to me no more than five minutes after the first attempt to download.

Without any knowledge of the code on the server side it is difficult to be sure what is happening but it looks as if either:

a) files on the server are being deleted somewhere between 5 minutes and 12 hours after the first download attempt and before successful completion is reported back

or

b) file permissions are being changed in a similar timeframe.

I think we can rule out file permissions not being set for all users originally as re-sends within five minutes of the first attempt at downloading seem to work OK.

It is possible that these Wu\'s are being caught by a follow on process and are being resent as original units (with different ids). That way they wouldn\'t impact the overall result, but I have no evidence one way or the other what ultimately happens to these units with too many errors.

I doubt we\'ll hear much from the project team about this (or indeed the other big issue hanging over from last year - what happened to the host stats) until the new term starts around Jan 20.
