Message 7425 - Posted: 11 Oct 2008, 14:53:25 UTC

Since the re-launch with the new work units dated 10/10/08, I think it is probably right to start a new thread.

My inital thoughts were very positive with download requests being met without any nasty messages. The new regime requiring only one 1 successul result per task looked logical (3,4,1). The units processed to date have got their 120 credits as originally promised.

Sad to say on checking my logs this afternoon I see \"no work sent messages\" and later \"committed to other platform messages\" too. It all started to unravel around 13:44:45 utc today with the first \"no work\" message followed by 5 more. First \"no work\" and \"commmited to other\" message was at 13:55:07 utc followed by 9 more. Just reverted to \"no work\" only. Last successful request was at 10:30:19 utc today

My client partly downloaded 5 units, it got stuck at 19.52%.

I manually deleted the units and have sat BOINC on \'no new work\' for this project for now.

Hopefully they eventually will get this up and running but I\'m not holding my breath ;)

Being loyal to the project I managed to get a few wu’s.
I crunched 2 successfully and were rewarded a disappointing 120cr as promised.
4h30m / wu / core on an over clocked (2.5) E2200.
This is worse than an old 1.6 Celeron on SETI!

If one look at the all recent events:
a) Risk of losing cr ( Over didn’t need)
b) Very low rewards
c) No feedback from admin
d) Bad management of the project - etc.
Then it is not worth the energy and effort to crunch here anymore.
So I will do the same as the other 95% - move to greener pastures.
Maybe I’ll be back if admin get their act (hopefully) together

I totally agree!! My computer time is valuable, and other projects value and respect my contributions. I have invested considerable computer time recently on this project because they PROMISED that credits would be awarded this time, unlike prior times. And I assumed that they also intended to use and benefit from the work I did, not just throw it away.

So, instead, they are sitting on a bunch of my work units, all successfully reported, that so far appear to be part of the abortion. Wasted. Useless. Uncredited.

Wynand is totally right. These guys cannot be trusted. And the only way to earn our trust back will be for them to go back and keep the promises they made. Until they do that, I see no reason for anyone to accept any new work.

But between these periods, just before 0400 UTC on the 13th, I actually managed to download a new unit.
So might it be useful to check what was happening to the server around this time?

I\'m getting the shared memory error as well:

Cosmology@Home 10/13/2008 9:08:02 AM Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. Requesting 19939 seconds of work, reporting 2 completed tasks
Cosmology@Home 10/13/2008 9:08:07 AM Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks
Cosmology@Home 10/13/2008 9:08:07 AM Message from server: Server error: can\'t attach shared memory

The time is central (UTC-6)

To the best of my knowledge this is due to a permissions error on the server. I can\'t remember the details, but it\'s fairly well documented on several BOINC related help sites. I\'ll find a link if the project folks need it.

I am new here and got first WU\'s today and then was plagued with server cannot attach shared memory error. Came here to see what was up and found a lot of gripping. Will watch closely to see how this pans out and whether I will continue.

I\'m getting tons of errors also.
\"Temporarly failed download of ... HTTP error\"
and
\"Server error: can\'t attach to shared memory\"

Was a problem with the logrotate daemon again; just fixed it.

Setting credit at 140 for now, we\'ll see how that works out.

It doesn\'t look like it\'s really fixed .

Between 3:12 and 3:33 utc one of my machines managed to get two test work units and report completed tasks. Other machine didn\'t report in that window so missed out. Looks like the same problem as yesterday - feeder is not running either again.

Obviously I can\'t see what\'s going on behind the scenes, but (taking a blind stab in the dark) usually this error either means;

a. the feeder isn\'t running (so the scheduler cannot access the database through it) or
b. has to do with the scheduler and feeder not having membership in the same group (or the feeder was run as a different user, etc.) so they cannot share memory.

I know the status page indicates the feeder isn\'t running, but I think it\'s possible for it to indicate that in either of these scenarios.

Honestly, I really don\'t know what\'s going on... just throwing out any suggestion because I\'d really like to see the project back up and going. :\\

Same issue here. I have one of the aborted WU\'s on my PC and I can\'t get rid of it OR get new work.

Now, to those that are CRYBABIES about the credit granted here vs any other project. GET A LIFE. Each project can grant credit based on what they think is fair, NOT based on what other projects think is fair. Credits are NOT an easy number to judge based on the mix of CPU\'s, OS\'s, Platforms, and many other variables in the individual project. If all you want are credits then find the project that gives you the most bang for the buck and stay there. And shut up on the forums of projects that you don\'t like the compensation. In the begining this was about SCIENCE, and in the end it is still about SCIENCE. Credits are just a game, nothing more.

ADMINS, I hope that you work out your server and WU issues so that we can get on with the SCIENCE!

Peace!

The shared memory error appears to be gone and I\'m crossing my fingers that it doesn\'t come back! :)

Thanks for fixing it, Mystery Person! ;)

Aah yes - but did you notice that the test units were ones that were created a month ago and which have already been round the system and been cancelled as not needed?
I think there is room for more disappointment here.
