Test page for the new design

Not everything is working on this test page, but the design should be. Please check it out for any bugs or serious issues.

Note: I plan on implementing variable-width, so please no complaints about it being too narrow.

I'd make the links a tad greener. Now, with the grayish green, they don't differ much from the static black text. Could be my eyes, monitor saturation and/or opinion, though. ;-)

One addition, the BOINC logo has changed. Probably wise to use the new one?

I'm glad to see that the "ghost menu" has gone.

Looks good Scott :) P.S. I like maximum contrast due to old eyes as well.

Looks great on this end!

If you really are out to make it perfect, you can run it through an HTML validator and CSS validator. Most of the issues look pretty minor. Although fixing all the problems would be ideal, the only one I would highly recommend correcting is the rss feed validation error. It appears the link in the <copyright> section is throwing fits.

Overall, I say "congratulations" on the good work! I really like the new design.

[edit] Oops. I just re-read the main post and see that not everything is expected to be working yet. In that case, you can save my comments for the next round of revisions. :-) Everything looks good, Scott.

Looks good to me except for one thing----I'm not the User of the Day :)

I like it. I really like having the menus at the top of each page. I never liked having to go back to the home page to go to another section. Good work!

Checked in FF 2 and Konqueror (running in Fedora 7) and looks good. Everything seems to function ok.

Good job.

Looks good to me also running FF2. The light green is better to me than a bright (high contrast)green as it seems to smear to me. (old eyes too)

Hi -

Some more background info on the design:

We fine-tuned the link color quite a lot. It's actually amazing how different colors look on different screens, even if they use the same technology. Your personal brightness, contrast and color settings make a big difference too. We converged on the current link color because seems to look good on a range of monitors and shows up in good contrast to the background while fitting into the overall color palette of the design.

In response to earlier comments we increased the text size and improved the color contrast of regular text as well as the link color. This is in addition to changing from JavaScript to CSS (thanks Scott!) to make everything work well on the broadest possible range of browsers.

By the way - check out our free desktop backgrounds (community->Downloads on the new page). Our graphics designer Laura did an outstanding job realizing the concepts I described to her.

All the best,

Ben

Even the browser makes a difference, it would seem.

I posted that last night, after checking it in Mozilla Seamonkey 2.0a in Windows.
Now I am checking it again on the same machine, but in Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.5 on Linux, it looks a lot brighter. No changes to the monitor settings... Go figure. :)

Just out of curiosity - how many people are actually using our desktop backgrounds?

Now that I found them, I just put on the grey one. :)

BTW: the test (front)page throws some 'permission denied' errors at me.

The new web page is not showing correctly for me, in either Firefox or IE 7. It looks like it is still under construction...

There seems to be a problem with the database access.

Hi -

Scott made some server and security upgrades which seems to have temporarily broken the test page. I just pointed it out to him and I am sure it'll be fixed really quickly.

We might even just put it up as the default page, possibly with a link to the old page for those who have fallen in love with it and prefer not to change.

All the best,

Ben

I'd say go for it, make it default!
