05/04/2008 09:51:52|Cosmology@Home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 114700 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks Im Getting the same on all my hosts but according to the status page the results ready to send continues to rise (57,392). It might help if the project staff would keep at least one eye on things instead of once a week posting a short hooray for us we fixed it again on the front page and then disappearing again while everything falls to pieces. And do they even look at the posts on the forum, I very much doubt it or they would have a far better grasp of exactly how bad things are. m4rtyn ************************** ![]() ![]() |

Otherwise there would be some information flowing. When not even the admins are interested in their project.... that is poor |

Maybe this project was ill-conceived from the start: \"Hey, wouldn\'t it be fun for us (to borrow an idea) frat types to set up a boinc project. Cool!\" Only they don\'t realize that DC participants mean serious business, while the frat types aren\'t that dedicated when a fun project ceases to be fun. That new toy whose luster tarnishes. |

Maybe this project was ill-conceived from the start But isn\'t that true of most Projects when they first start out & for some time after they\'ve been running, look @ how many have been down for 6 month\'s to over a year because the Dev\'s can\'t figure out the Applications to release new Wu\'s. I\'m quite sure somebody involved with the Project knows by now that Wu\'s are not being sent out, so you guy\'s can go on all weekend long about it & keep lambasting Scott & the Project in General or you can give it a rest & see what happens Monday or hopefully sooner. Personally I have calls in for more work, if I get any fine, if I don\'t that\'s fine too, it\'s the projects loss & not mine if the Servers don\'t want to send any work or somebody has the sending work feature simply shut off. |

Maybe this project was ill-conceived from the start If the DC community puts up with this, then that\'s all we\'re going to get. Don\'t we as a group need to hold these projects to a higher standard than we do now? If we only expect mediocraty, then that\'s all we\'ll get - ineffective or incompetent admins who appear and disappear, crappy servers, broken applications, project scientists who lose interest and are never heard from, and general disrespect toward their needed assets. How hard would it be to turn this into a department project, monitored by the students, ready to report to the primary scientist and the admin at the first sign of trouble? It would be great training for the real world. Get with it, or get out, Cosmology! |

If the DC community puts up with this, then that\'s all we\'re going to get. Are you kidding? If you haven\'t noticed, this project way over grants credit. Personally I don\'t care if they do or don\'t, but all the \"credit whores\" flock to projects like this one and don\'t care so much about the problems as long as they eventually get their over-inflated credits. I\'m no fan of trying to create a false parity between projects, but if this project granted in the same range as most of the other projects, they might have 3 or 4 computers crunching for them. This project is proof positive that the staff can suck, but as long as they overgrant credits, they\'ll get the resources they need and can treat the \"donors\" any way they want. |

In all the projects I have been involved with, I have been disappointed or down right angry with all of them at one time or another except classic Seti...my 1st involvement with DC.... and maybe thats why....I never had expectations anywhere like I do now....complain as you all will if put into a good perspective this is another pitstop on a road travelled...projects have started great.....then went very bad....and then very good again.A lot of you appear very new to DC.I have also never seen a project ridiculed and jawed to death in the forums change much because of that.It is always real world conditions behind the scenes that changes conditions at the project level we see.Seems it is the nature of the buisness and that becomes the real attraction to Boinc which is the power to choose. |

@Xaak: sad but true, this project is as popular as it is solely because of the high credits granted (when working!) IMHO. The science may sound good in theory but obviously the dev\'s aren\'t interested in keeping their project running in a consistent manner. |

Maybe this project was ill-conceived from the start LOL ... All this from somebody who until about 10 days ago hadn\'t even run the Cosmology Project for the previous 20+ Days before that. But then when some problems crop up here comes Angus running back in his A-Typical Troll Fashion wanting to hold the project to a Higher Standard. Whats the matter Angus, you get thrown out of all the other projects already, Troll On Bro, Troll On ... :) |

If the DC community puts up with this, then that\'s all we\'re going to get. You really don,t have a clue do you? I\'m one of those you so disrespectfully call a \"Credit Whore\". Participating in DC projects purely for competitive reasons is nothing to be ashamed of. Having said that, \"Over-inflated credits\" or not, I\'ll waste no more of my time on any project where the admin shows this level of disregard for it\'s participants. m4rtyn ************************** ![]() ![]() |

So ... the project has now tanked because I started running it again? I think I was back before the recent problems started. Or ... maybe I didn\'t crunch Cosmology because of violent disagreements with the admin previously over his head-in-the-sand attitude over credits? Trying to figure out what you\'re trying to say, other than trolling or trying to distract from the message. You think the project is well run, by attentive admins, lots of handholding of their valued participants, good stable applications, servers that don\'t crash and are properly configured and setup to handle the load? |

If the DC community puts up with this, then that\'s all we\'re going to get. Hey, I\'m a credit whore too, at least to some extent, I run a stats site :-). That\'s why I put it in quotes. Good to see you won\'t put up with this though. Unfortunately, too many people will, which will allow them to continue on with business as usual. |

Update on server problems: At first, we thought the problem lay just with Debian\'s start-up table integrity check for mysql. However, even though removing the check improved the situation somewhat, problems obviously still persisted. Mysql was using a bunch of memory with only 1% CPU or so. After further investigation, we discovered that mysql spent nearly all of it\'s time waiting for the disk. After talking with some support people and playing around with the mysql config file, we were able to significantly lower the IO delays. The result is that now the web page seems to be loading a lot faster than before, the server is no longer chugging, and the average mysql query time is much, much lower. In addition, processes no longer seem to be piling up in the mysql process list, which means that queries from the project daemons are being answered properly. I want to say that this is the end of the database problems, but I will wait for another couple of days before deciding that all is well with that part. I am continuing to investigate why work doesn\'t seem to be flowing very well at the moment. For now, I\'m going to increase the number of available WUs for crunching, a temporary solution. Also: I will keep credit the way it is for now to make up for all of the credit lost. After a couple of days, I may knock it back down to around 50 or so. Also: please post in the \"General Discussion\" if you want to blow off steam. It\'s hard for me to wade through all of these posts to see the technical problems when most of the thread is dedicated to trashing us. Scott Kruger Project Administrator, Cosmology@Home |

Update on server problems: The task scheduler relies heavily on MySQL calls, it could be that if the server gets a time-out it just returns \"no work available\". ![]() ![]() Boinc Button Abuser In Training >My Shrubbers< |

Forums are getting sluggish again. Might want to check to see if the project has enabled resending of lost workunits. If so, disable that, as it is a drag on server performance. ![]() |

Forums are getting sluggish again. Actually, the option was on because before recently, we didn\'t have a very large user-base. You\'re right though; it\'s probably time to turn it off. Scott Kruger Project Administrator, Cosmology@Home |
