It looks like somebody needs to go kick the Validator, it\'s showing as Not Running unless that\'s intentional ... ???

I had to add some more error checking to the validator, but it looks like it\'s back up now.

Message 4911 - Posted: 3 Feb 2008, 21:07:05 UTC - in response to Message 2139.

Not so urgent, I think, but after deattaching and then attaching to the project in the new url \"cosmologyathome\", I can\'t get any new WU\'s. I get a message about not having enough disk space. In fact, i have 978 MB (not too much, but I\'m ruuning Ubuntu in a little partition) Is it really a problem?

Thanks a lot.

Is your swap space on another partition?

2.11 is much better than 2.08 and 2.09 (I skipped 2.10) on my Dual Athlon MP2600+.

The .chk file is quite large now but it is not written new every fraction of a second.

The box sometimes seems slightly sluggish but that is an acceptable behaviour, if I need much CPU power I can still pause the application (which does work fine now !).

I have set BOINC Manager to use ONE processor in stead of both. this has allowed the wu to be completed.

Have suspended COSMOLOGY@HOME until a fix is issued.

I think that a lot of credit hunters are joined to MilkyWay@home project :)

Including yourself I see :) (as well as myself) Finally Milkyway seems to have fixed many of its past issues as well, as a steady stream of work seems available now - and the servers are staying up for more than 5 minuets at a time.

However, I am VERY glad to see that Cosmo is on the mend - I have bee treading water in other projects waiting for Cosmo to come around. I will give it a few more days, but from what I can see things are starting to look up around here again.

I just checked a couple more machines this is what I have been finding - It may be related to the problem.

The systems that are using the http://www.cosmologyathome.org/ seem to be the ones getting the timeout issues..

the ones using http://cosmologyathome.org/ returns the warning message to use the http://www.cosmologyathome.org/ name but seem to be able to report after a minute or so.

Could we be having another naming issue ???

Not often enough.

Which is Par for the Course after awhile once a Project gets started, it seems the Projects always get shoved to the back burner as the Dev\'s have more important things to be doing other than worrying whether their Project is running or not ... o_0

Personally I\'d like to see a uniformed agreement among the Participants @ Projects like this to just Abort all their Wu\'s and walk away from it. When the Dev\'s finally do check in on their I can\'t be bothered with it project let them figure out where everybody went.

And don\'t tell me the Projects Beta, if it is then thats all the more reason for the Dev\'s to Communicate more & check in on it at least more than once a week or month or ever if thats what they do.

For the last 3 or 4 day\'s we have:

1. Wu\'s Failing or Looping @ then just being Re-Issued so they can Fail or Loop for the next 4-6 People
2. Can\'t Download Work or very little if any at all (This is the most irritating Problem of them all & has been ever since the Projects inception & never really has been fixed to date yet)
3. Can\'t Upload Finished Wu\'s or very slow in getting them Uploaded
4. Harder that Heck to move around the Forum or your Account
5. Wu\'s not being Validated (I personally have over 1/2 Million Credits coming & I know others have more than that)
6. Wu\'s being Validated with 0 Credit

Probably some other Problems that I\'m forgetting, other than those whats not to like about this project ... ;) ... All these problems without any word from Scott or anybody, a nice I\'m working on it or just deal with it I\'ll fix it when I get ready to would be nice and takes all of 5 seconds to post ... :)

Whats the Point in having a Urgent Problems Thread when it\'s quite obvious nothing about this Project is very Urgent to anybody that has to fix the Urgent Problems.

I\'d like to follow up the post by PoorBoy with a bit of perspective...

I don\'t know if anyone has paid attention, but I have spoken my mind about the decision not to roll back to CAMB version 2.05, which includes the server-side support for that. It is my opinion that these issues could\'ve been avoided by going back to a known working configuration. Instead, the decision was made to keep going to try to get the new stuff working. This is admirable, to an extent, but there comes a point where it is like a fighter pilot with a critically damaged plane that they\'re not going to be able to land in one piece. The pilot can either choose to keep trying to land, or they use their ejection seat.

If one thing is clear right now, it should be that the ejection seat should\'ve been used earlier. It is still not too late though...

Anyway, that is my \"Q-TIPS\" moment (Quest To Irritate Project Staff). Now, however, it is time for my \"Q-TIPP\" moment (Quest To Irritate Project Participants).

Several things that PoorBoy said don\'t ring true with me, at least not when looked at over a longer than 4 day time horizon.

There is an assertion that downloading work has been a hassle for a very long time. I find that to be untrue, although I suppose I do have little itty bitty single-core systems and not big quad or octo systems with huge caches. My experience has been that, at least until the past few days, this project is the easiest out of the 4 that I participate in to get work, process work, and report work. A close second place (or perhaps tie) would be Einstein, but the downloads are larger there and take more time, since all we get here are these highly compressable INI files.

Secondly, I think the \"half a million waiting\" remark is misleading. If all were the 100 credit tasks, this means that 5,000 tasks are waiting to be validated and have the credit granted. Since PoorBoy is the top participant, I\'m sure that is possible, but there will always be a lag between total results reported by a participant and the total number of tasks that have met quorum and are waiting validation. If 5,000 of the current approx 15,000 workunits pending validation belonged to one person, that means that 1/3rd of pending belongs to one person. If \"others have more\", then that reaches the potential of having 90% or more of the total pending being held by 5-10 people.

So, while I appreciate the fact that we\'re frustrated, and I agree that it doesn\'t seem like anyone is working on the issues, let\'s try not to exaggerate. Let\'s try to stick to clear and concise descriptions of the problems. If we do not, it can lead to thinking that people are \"crying wolf\" and that things are not truly as bad as they are.

Respectfully,

Brian

Brian and PB; I just put together another rig and have been trying to get work. I have gotten as may as six WU\'s by trying a combination of Boinc 5.10.30/5.10.45, www.cosom..., and cosmo...., adjusting my local preferences, resetting the project, detaching/reattaching and retrying communications. I get \"there is work but it is committed to other platforms\", \"no work sent\", or \"server cannot open the database\".

No luck. The server is clearly on its weekend schedule, and the software suffers from bit rot. First we had St Pattys fun, then Easter fun, and now we have Opening day weekend fun. My new rig is an AMD Brisbane core X2 4400 (59.00-free ship) running At 3ghz, pushing 64 bit Linux. What a waste of resources. The most urgent problem this project has is lack of attention, but not from the volunteers who in most cases are busting their butt just trying to push a few volts their way.

Anyone care to recommend another project with a 64 bit app? I have a number of rigs looking for a new home.

Actually a Team Mate of mine is the Top Participant ... cicide

Several things that PoorBoy said don\'t ring true with me, at least not when looked at over a longer than 4 day time horizon.

There is an assertion that downloading work has been a hassle for a very long time. I find that to be untrue

I do believe the are plenty of Participants still around that remember the almost weekly Friday Night Work Outages because the Server wouldn\'t send any work to anybody. I didn\'t run the Project for awhile so it could have been better during that period, but since I\'ve came back the problem is still there to me it seems.

Secondly, I think the \"half a million waiting\" remark is misleading.

Yeah what do I know since I haven\'t even been able to get into my Pending Credits for 2 days now because it\'s so bloated with Wu\'s. At the Wu Length we have now I turn in about 100 Wu\'s Per hour with my Mini Farm, that\'s 8,000 Credits Per Hour even at the new 80 Credits Per Wu which I still haven\'t got into yet.

Since 5:00 AM (My Time) this morning I\'ve turn in about 1400 Wu (14 Hr\'s ago) which = about 112,000 Credits (80 Credits Per 1400 Wu\'s) & my Credit in my Account has only risen 24,000 Credits, so about 88,000 more Credits have been dumped into my Pending Credits in just the last 14 Hr\'s alone...But like you say I\'m way over stating my Pending Credits and probably only have a couple hundred if that many even ... :)
